Default Pulling engine. Top or bottom???

I'm going to be pulling the engine out to do some work on it. I want to know everyone's experiences with pulling it from the top and bottom. I don't have a car lift, I'll just be using an engine hoist. This will also be done in my driveway/garage. What will be easier top or bottom?

BTW I'm asking about the WS6.

bottom.

check the FAQ for engine removal guides. i did mine in the driveway.

I just pulled mine out the top tonight, tranny and all. I did have the heads off already though.

Did mine from the bottom, although I'm fortunate to have a 2-post lift in my shop. Engine/tranny on cart in 90 minutes.

I saw an other removal once. It was at a salvage yard, it involved a cutting torch, and a large cement cutting wheel. I wouldn't say it came out from any way, it never really came out, everything else just disappeared.

bottom. It took for ever to get out the top. Reinstalled it in the bottom and had it running in less than 2 hours

EIther way works fine. I have done this both ways. Out the bottom with a lift is a cake walk. The worst part was getting the front shock bolts back through the holes. Out the top is not bad either. I did have the heads off already. But then you know that.

If you are using an engine hoist pull it out the top. If you had a car lift I would say out the bottom. I pulled mine out the top. I did not remove the ac system just laid compressor on the shop floor. I also did not remove any of rubber moldings for hood and windshield. All of the pulleys, accessories, coil packs, headers or manifolds, and starter were removed before pull. I kept intake and heads on car. I put a small chain in the second header bolt on each side of the head and unbolted motor mounts from inside the chasis and off of the motor. Turned front of motor slightly toward the driver's side and out the top. It's not for the faint of heart though and I recommed buying header studs makes that installation alot easier and well worth a $100 dollars in knuckle skin.

if you have to do it in the driveway it seems the only answer would be top. i did mine from the bottom seemed much easier than top. dropped right out.

Came out through the top...going in from the bottom. If you don't have to pull the trans, its no big deal coming from the top. A lot more crap should come off coming from the top, but if you're limited to the standard engine lift and have no SAFE means of pulling from the bottom, then you'll be fine. Just takes a little longer...
