i pulled the heads last night to find the drivers side studs to be seated at only about 10ft/lbs. Not to mention most of my spark plugs were loose. when i pulled the driver side head i noticed that the gasket was no longer flat, it had a large deviation which made it impossible for me to lay the gasket flush with the complete surface it was supposed to cover. there are no marks or holes and im hoping to be able to reuse these gaskets.. any opinions? what is this copper stuff everyone is telling me that i need to put on the gaskets before i lay the heads on? they are the cometic .040" gaskets.

First of all if you had a lot of coolant in your oil while you ran it I'd say your berrings are toast. You can have your heads planed by a machine shop to get them straight again but the damage is most likely already done.
The copper spray everyone is talking about is avalible at O'riellys and probobly most parts stores. Its not copper spray paint, its copper spray.

Good luck with the motor but from what I hear even a table spoon of coolant in a running motor will kill the berrings.

it's a tough call man if u only ran like 10 of those miles with coolant u might get away with it, unless ur oil was like 40% coolant or something. so if u had a whole **** load of coolant in there i would atleast talk to a reputable engine builder about it.

Fix it, run it. If the engine's quiet and has good oil pressure then the bearings should be OK. Since oil and water don't mix it's possible the coolant wasn't picked up by the pump and circulated.

I hate to be the bad guy here, and I really hope the best for you, but I have personally seen engines that were run only about 20 minutes with coolant in the oil ruin all the berrings. Its a gamble only because of the crank. If you drive it and the berrings are bad, you could totally ruin the crank. But like I say its a gamble. Best of luck with it.

from the race engines in the past i have built, i would say you might ask well put new mains/rods/ in it now while you have the top end apart. its not going to cost near as much to put them in now as it will if you run them and they are bad. then you are looking at a fresh ground crank, reconditioned rods, and all that good stuff.... if i was you, i would just take your time and take it apart and do it right. but, thats my .02
