Default How do properly store a cam?

I am getting a used cam from another member, won't be putting it in til springtime. He has already lubed it with whatever oil the cam should be lubed with, and has placed it back in the bag it cam ein. Is that good enough? Do I have to relube it before spring or just keep it sealed in the bag? ANy suggestions?

just keep it out of humidity, check it for rust ~ once a week and clean and re-oil it before you stick it in.

Edc recommended cleaning it with brake cleaner and putting a good coat of grease on it. But if you do so be sure to clean it with brake cleaner before you put it in.

why? Cams are stored in the factory/warehouse/speed shop in horizontal boxes, and when they go in the engine they sit horizontally. if anything, don't store it vertically with the top leaning against something as all the weight goes to bending the cam in half...anyone with a guitar will tell you that

A magic trick is to grease it lightly and vacuum seal it in a plastic bag. No air, no oxygen >>> no oxidation.

I got a plastic tube, padded it well with clean rags, put it in the tube and filled the tube with oil. Cam is completely submerged in oil. Of course, if I ever use it again (stock cam) it will be very messy to remove

The reason for storing it vertically is to avoid it bending. If it is stored straight up, not leaning on anything it will be fine. Main thing is to have it oiled up to avoid corrosion. I like the air vacuum bag idea.

i dont think it would bend no matter how you store it.It sits in the engine with a couple hundred pounds of force pushing down on it from the valve springs,it wont bend. And if you have double springs with 250#closed then thats like 425 # after the rockers are added in.

WE manufacture cams where i work.... when we store cams we take a mix of WD40 and oil wipe down the cam make sure not to touch it with your hands. Then spray a coat of that on it after you cleaned it. We have cam bags with one open end that we put a wire tie around. Then place it in the cam box and on a shelf horizontally it doesnt really matter for the short time as long as you dont store stuff on top of it.

Agreed, not touching it with hands is a good idea. Main thing is to not put stuff on top of it, and if you store it vertically make sure it won't fall/be knocked over.
