Default Oil pump shimming instead of replacement??

I'm wondering if you can shim the spring in the oil pump to provide high pressure instead of buying a ported pump? Its on a 98 and I read everywhere to get a ported one for that year but if the pressure increases by shimming it why would I go and buy ported one? And just a quick question about timing chains, what should I go with on a budget build for light track use (as in 250-400 miles a month) I've heard of going LS2 and there are double roller chains but there is machining involved and I'm trying to avoid any machine shop work. Help me out thanks.

EDIT: This will be a h/c Engine with bolt ons looking for 420 rwhp

Do yourself a favor and just buy the LS-6 pump. The LS-1 pump's aren't very good.

I would go with the LS-2 timing chain, especially if you are on a budget. They are alot beefier than the stock LS-1 pump.

Just get a ported oil pump. I think they can be had for 125$. Shimming the spring won't do as much as porting. With porting you can increase oil flow out the pump, shimming won't do that.

For budget just use the LS2 timing chain. Its only 30$ and will work fine.

If the original pump is producing adequate volume, what harm would shimming for a little more pressure do? Also, does the LS2 timing chain require any machine work or is it a direct replacement for the LS1? Thanks

I understand about the volume of oil, but increased pressure won't compensate? How much is an LS6 pump? This engine is being built from scratch on a tight budget, I'm trying to cut as many safe corners as I can.

LS2 chain is direct replacement, no problems.

Porting the pump will allow some extra oil flow. The shimming will increase pressure a little, but you don't really want a LOT of pressure. The porting will increase the area of oil flow.

Stock pump + increase pressure = marginal gain in flow
Ported pump + stock pressure = better gain in flow and less load on pump

Plus, you have a 98, which is the worst year for oil pumps. At least buy a regular NEW oil pump. I think they are only $70 from GM.

I would think that shimming would be good for if you planned on going the double-roller route. But like was said before the Ls2 chain is a very good replacement.
As far the Oil Pump...LS6 -----------------> Pick just about any parts sponsor, and they should have one.

If your that far into it, I would recommend at minimum buying a new stock pump from a dealer, or any of the sponsors listed to the right hand side. The stock pumps from 97-00 had pressure regulator valve sticking issues which could cause a loss of oil pressure at any time.

I'm partial to the TSP modified LS6 pumps since I port them myself. I shim mine to .080", which equates to a ~10psi increase in pressure.

ok, well i think i'm set on the LS2 chain. If I need a new pump then I need a new pump. I wouldn't spend 90 bucks on an LS6 when I can get a ported LS6 for 120. Having said that if anyone has an extra LS6 oil pump lying around I would be interested in it at a reduced price Thanks for the help guys.
