I just lowered my oil pan about a 1/2" but the front of the car was raised, so some oil (maybe half a cup) spilled out the back, and possibly into the bell housing. It's hard to say if any got in there. Any advice??

There are two metal little inspection covers at the bottom of the bellhousing. Pop them out with the screw driver and see if any oil comes out. If there's still some oil left in there, I don't imagine that it would be that big of a deal. The underside of the car will be oily for probably the next 6 months though.

 

remember to drain the oil next time. i do silly stuff like that at least once a week, then i have to take more of the car apart to clean it all up. with that being said, the best bet would be dropping the tranny and flywheel to clean it up. thats not very realistic though, for someone without a lift and tranny jack. so i'd close the oil pan back up, go buy lots of brake clean and spray it in there as best you can until it drains out clear, then drain the oil, then re-lower the pan and continue working. you dont want oil anywhere near your clutch disc, so dont spray towards it. if its an A4 car, i wouldn't worry about it unless its a show car, then you would want to clean it up so like kpowr82 said, you dont end up with that oil spread out on the underside of the car.

 

So taking those covers off is not enough?

 

Sorry, I should have been more specific. If you're an A4, the method I described is sufficient. M6 guys, I'm not sure about. I know the LT1s don't even have the bottom half of the bellhousing on their A4s, just a piece of plastic (inspection cover), I'm assuming stuff getting up inside the bellhousing is not detrimental to the mechanics of it.

 

Do you mean the two plastic inspection plates that bolt near the back of the oil pan w/a 10 mm bolt?

They cover the lower front of the bellhousing? This is how the oil would have gotten in there.

They were off because they are in the way a little for the oil pan bolt.

I'm just going to lower the front of the car before I button up oil pan and the inspection plates and see if anything drips out. What'd ya think??

 

It is an M6 a 98!

 

the m6 has a slot on the bottom of the tranny for drainage,the oil will not hurt anything running down the inside,unless it was sprayed in there it wont hurt a thing,the clutch assembly will be untouched by it,just forget about it and it will drain out by itself when the car is leveled.

That's good news. I think I'll spray a little brake cleaner down into the bellhousing through the inspection plates to loosen up the oil before I button it up. That should help get most of it outa there! Thanks-
