How do I find the best intake runner volume for my setup?
I finally sold my current heads, and am in the market for some new ones for my LS2 402 project. But before I buy, I need to figure out which set of heads will work best with my current list of parts.
Here's what I have to work with:
I see that I can get any combustion chamber I want with ET Performance heads. But how do I determine the optimal intake runner volume for this setup. I know it works a lot of the time, but bigger isn't always better.
Given what I already have, the 245's work better, or should I limit myself to the 225's because of the cam duration?
Here's what I have to work with:
- SDPC LS2 402, -14cc dished pistons (need ~59cc heads)
- FAST 90/90 setup, no MAF (open loop tuning)
- Kooks 1 7/8" headers
- Comp cams 242/250 .611"/.619" 114+2 LSA Cam (XER grind)
- Hellfire rings gapped for up to 200hp worth of Nitrous
- If it matters, it's with a TCI 3800 stall/A4/3.73 geared 12 bolt setup
I see that I can get any combustion chamber I want with ET Performance heads. But how do I determine the optimal intake runner volume for this setup. I know it works a lot of the time, but bigger isn't always better.

The 245's will be fine. Espeacially on the spray. The problem in the larger port volumes is when th eporter is using a larger port to obtain a "bigger" flow number. This will cause the head to loose velocity and have a larger cross sectional area. It all adds up to a poor head. I don't think you'll have to worry about any of the above with the ET heads. If you sprayed a fair amount, you may even opt for the 255's.
