Default Crane Cams

Ok here is my question. I am doing a head and cam stock bore and stroke ls1. The intake I am using is a gmpp intake setup for fuel injection, patriot performance ls6 stage 3 heads. I have all the bolt ons and then some plus 4:10 gears. The only thing left I have to get is the cam. I called Crane today talked to someone about a cam. I told him my specs and he said the cam I need is a 228 228 600 600 112. I dont understand this because he said I do not have enough head to support anything bigger. So a T-rex cam is to big for stock heads? I dont understand where he is comeing from maybe I missed something. Any info on why I couldnt put a bigger cam as far as duration goes or a little bigger on the lift would be much appreciated.

That's a stout cam as far as lift is concerned. It's got more than the typical lift for the advertised duration. I think what he is saying is it would be optimal. You can put as big a cam you want in your car as long as it fits, but it may not be worth all of the headaches. Not to mention that it would be all top end power. I see nothing wrong with that cam. Should put out near 400rwhp.

Edit:
Ok well I see you are getting stage 3 patriots. Scratch most of what I said. That cam should still work great and drive nicely. You could put a bigger cam in if you wanted to and make more power, but driveability will typically be an issue. It looks like a promising cam for ~450rwhp, however you can go bigger if you'd like. I honestly don't know why crane would have said that.

I was going to have comp custom grind me a cam 235 237 608 610 113 with 2 degrees advance but he said that is too big. I dont understand why he would say that when people are running much larger cams than the one above on stock heads and makeing lots of power and not over camming the motor. I think he was telling me this because thats what they have in stock. Thanks for the quick reply anymore advice is apprecitated

Here's a good example for you. Bigger is not always better.

A friend just put a Crane 228 / 232 .551/.551 (.583 lift with their 1.8 rockers) in his 434 Vette with stage 3 heads. ( recommended by Roger Vinci )
I thought he was nuts!!!

Well yesterday he called me from the dyno - it made just over 500 HP & 500 TQ at 4800 RPM. (He still has some issues - when the car gets hot, it breaks up bad at 4800 RPM) When he gets that fixed, I think he should see close to 550 HP out of that little cam.

The car runs and drives as well as a stock, but it pulls very hard everywhere.
The car is usless in 1st and 2nd on street tires and in 3rd gear at 3500 rpm, it will kick the *** end out and spin the tires pretty hard.
I'm sure he could pick up some more power with a bigger cam, but it would start taking away drivabillity.

You could throw a mid 230 low 240 cam in that 434 and it would drive almost like stock. There is a good bit of power left in that. Throw a bigger cam like a mid 240 with ~.650 lift and it should pull near 600rwhp and still have decent street manners.

When supposedly the T-rex or cams of similar size will put 410 or more to the wheels on stock heads and bottom end my cam choice does not seem all that out of scope.
