just the shorty? block is worth about $400 bare, crank about $200. If it is still assembled and looks good, probably worth an easy $800-900 cash.

How old can a block be before it's useless for a build?

its fine as long its structurally sounds, the cylinders can always be resleved, but often a new shortblock may be cheaper than a used one plus a resleveing

John wouldn't care. If he wanted one he'd just buy the factory that makes them.

20,000 isnt many miles, but I think that 800 sound good too.
