Default Map sensor damaged by backfire?
I have read that the Map sensor can be ruined by a backfire in the intake. Is this true. If damaged would the engine start with the MAP sensor not working?

Yes this could and has damged MAP,MAF sensors. You will get a DTC if it is bad.
