Question Cam options for stock manifolds

Im looking to start my next mod on my 98 Trans Am. Current mods are lid, cutout, and TCI 3000 stall.

I want to do a camshaft next, but I live in Cali and can't do the headers to maximize the cam. So what are my best cam options? I want something that will get the most power from stock heads and manifolds, but still be civil enough to pass smog. So far I like the Gt2-3, crane 220/224, and VHP Boss 2. I know about the CheaTR but my only concern is the high lift rates. I will do the LS6 Intake and tune to go along with the cam, thanks.

If it is under 230...from what i hear... you should be fine. The CheaTR would work good with stock exhaust manifolds and can be tuned to appear stock.

You could get a custom grind.
I did a 210/224, .555/.567 115+1
Works as I designed it, so far with no other mod but tuning with a VINCI handheld, I got 27rwhp and 32rwtq out of it, all else stock.

Who did your cam Predator? Is it based off the crane/vinci lobes? That cam looks promising. like a CheaTR cam but easier on the drivetrain.

I designed it and go it ground on XE Comp lobes.
It is a mixture of LS6/CheaTR and VINCI VE's.

You can always go the route of a reverse split, but it would have to be custom ground. I havent looked to see what kind of reverse splits are out right now but i think thunder racing has some smaller ones.

From my experience, reverse work well with stock heads but need good exhaust to compensate. I hashed a Stealth II 224/220 to death.

Predator, the crane cam I was looking at is sold by SDPC as the Z+220. I read a post saying that they can change the cam specs for the same price. It's current specs are 220/224 114, what would you change it too to work with stock manifolds? maybe 216/228?

An ideal cam with stock manifolds has already been created. It's called the Thunder Racing CheaTR. It was disigned to work specifically with exhaust manifolds. It also works very well with headers. Just because it's popular should not discount it and go to a custom grind. Thunder Racing spent years developing it. Save yourself the aggrevation and try out something proven.

I value your opinion Patrick G, and trust me I have looked at the cheatr and what it can do. I am just concerned about the very high intake lift. My car is a DD and I can't afford to have it break. I'm just looking for a cam that will work on stock manifolds and be easier on the valve train. In no way am I discounting the Cheatr just because its "popular." If I could get it with less lift I would be all over it, but then, it would'nt work like Thunder Racing wanted it too. I'm a newbie at this cam stuff and am just looking for any advice on other cams that would fill my requirements, i.e. Z+220, gt2-3...thanks.

Don't be afraid of the .600 lift. It's just fine as long as you run the right spring: Comp 918s shimmed to within .050" of coil bind or PP/PRC Duals with the same shimming.

I was able to make 354rwhp with stock manifold on a 98 with the old 216/220 cam. I did have the cats deleted and most other bolt ons though.

I ran my TSP 224R (224/224, .581/.581, 112) with my stock manifolds for a while. It ran great with the cutout open! However, I'd recommend 2000 or newer manifolds, they flow better than shorties.

918's or 921's?? I'd prefer the 921's.
