Default Ported stock vs. Dart heads

I have a 408 shortblock that Im building and Im trying to decide on whether or not to have a stage 3 job done on my stock lq4 heads or save up for some Dart 225's. Im doing the porting with help of some info from the site and experienced Automotive instructors at school.

- For some background on my project. I'm running 10.6:1 compression (91 octane in Ca), Weisco forged pistons, Compstar rods, Eagle crank, Cam Motion 239.7 int 242.6 ex .611/616 lift, a GMPP single plane intake with a accel Throttle body. Later on i would like to run a 250-300 shot. Its going into a 1st gen Camaro with a th350. My goal is to get around 500 rwhp.

I already have 2.08/1.60 valves for the lq4 heads and a well know local shop has quoted me around $400 for the valve job. Which heads will get the job done for the least amount of money. Im a poor college student and spending 2 grand on AFR's or ETP's is out of the question. What are your guy's opions?

The Dart 225s or some ported LS6 heads will work very well.

I have the Dart 205's that I bought fully assembled. I think the parts quality is excellent on these heads in the as delivered assembled setup. The casting under the rocker bosses is also beefier and should provide a little better support to the rocker setup than a ported stock head, so I would tend to lean towards the Darts myself.

If you already have te LQ4 heads then stay with the LQ4 heads. They are priven to be good heads for a large displacement motor. I would just have a shop port them while you are at it if they aren't ported already. TEA comes to mind but there are a dozen other companies out there so don't limit yourself to them eithor. Get an estimate of what it would cost to have them run the heads through their CNC programs and assemble the heads. You might be find that it is or isn't within your budget parameters.
