Default Shimming springs .050 from bind.

Had a few issues with the spring/retainers setup on the heads and have a new set of Golds and redesigned retainer/locks to replace them. (Big Thanks to Brian Tooley) Either harmonics or float occuring during dyno tune around 5800 rpm and up. Leaning towards harmonics as I don't see the gold floating with stocker rockers so early. Maybe a bad spring? Looking at shimming the new ones .060 to get the installed height pretty close to .050 from coil bind. Install hieght should be pretty close to 1.74 (I'll be setting each spring for exacts). How many of you guys are running a setup similiar and what do you think long term effect is on the springs abuse wise? Pressure should be approx 165 on the seat and 425 open. Float that G5X4!

I think that the spring will last longer and so will your rockers and lifers.
Valve float with these fast ramp rate cams can be controlled by shimming close to coil bid.
Brain has given some good advised once again.

Bob,
What springs are you running on the T-Rex? What installed height?

Just installed ET Heads with Comp 977 springs shimmed to .040 from bind.
Just fire it up today and the valve train noise is extremely quite.
I was going to use stock heads with Patriots Duals and shim to .040 from bind, that would have had a install height of 1.740.
Your on the right track.

I run crane 832's with my Trex at an install height of 1.760. I don't get any float, even with YT rockers. I don't recall what my coil bind is now but it's in the neighborhood of .080". I not sure I understand why you would shim so close to coil bind (.040"), can someone explain?
