Default Is it worth it?

I am thinking of upgrading my cam when I do my heads to get a little bit more horsepower but dont want to ruin my low end.

I really like the looks of the tsp 228r 228/228/.588/112 lift xe-r lobes.

My cam has xe lobes 224/224/.563/112.

Do you guys think that the tsp 228r would be a decent upgrade? Would I pick up 10 at the wheels or more by switching to it?

I am having a rough time deciding.....a 400 dollar question.

thanks

Not sure if it would be worth switching unless you went to like upper 230's and mid to high 240's for the power you are seemingly wanting. That is MS3, G5X4, and T-Rex territory.

Also anything bigger than what you already have will require gears and a tune if you don't already have one or the other...or both for that matter.

Its only worth it if you switch to a better flowing head AFR, DART, etc. If you have stock heads I would not bother switching cam.

He said that he was getting heads, but I was automatically assuming that they would be AFR, Dart, ect. Seems to be the going sets lately. Unles he was gonna test out the Trick Flows for all of us.

Why do you say that? The trex would be a good upgrade and will work well with stock heads. The MS3 would also make quit a bit more power with stock heads.

I am not going to put a cam that large in my daily driver....I dont want to spin my stock bottom end that high as well.
I have never even been to the track before.....so it is basically a street car.
But I do some playing around on the street every now and then....so, it needs to spin up fast

I just wanted something with a similar powerband with about 15-20 horsepower more. I want around 430 to the wheels and I dont think I will get that with my current cam/decent heads/and full bolt ons (I have a crank pulley waiting for install as well)

I am probably going to get the prc stage 1 ls6 heads or some patriot stage 2 ls6 heads.

I'd stay with your current cam and just throw a set of heads on it for now and see how you like it. Honestly, 224 grind cams are proven performers and it's gonna be hard to pick another cam that's gonna have the same type of street manners and powerband, but 10 more peak HP. Not gonna really happen on a 346 motor. A set of good heads will probiably net you at least 20 more hp if not more. I would wait and see like I said.

Would seem to me that by switching to the xe-r lobes...raising the lift by .025 and adding 4 degrees of duration....should net a decent power upgrade????
