Default Rear mail seal help !!

I went to the store a while ago and when I left and drove down the street my car started smoking and it smelled like engine oil so I stopped to check it out and it is leaking a lot of oil from the back of the motor looks like between the transmission and the motor. I guess this means that the rear seal went bad. Am I correct or is there anything else back there can leak bad like this?

Yeah its probably your rear main, the only other thing is the barbell restictor but I dont think that is your problem.

There is a plug that goes into the back of the crank behind the little bearing that the imput shaft of the tranny goes into.

Can this cause a significant leak of oil?

Without this your motor will have no oil pressure, thats why I said its probably not it. Not sure of the cost to get it fixed by a dealer, but if you are mechanicaly inclined you can do it yourself. I've done 2 so far with no special tools and had no problems.

You need to make some phone calls and get a price for your area.

I suspect that a shop will charge about 8 hours of labor and $100 - for parts + materials.

The transmission has to be pulled. The seal can probably be removed and replaced without pulling the rear cover. If it is the plug inside the crankshaft (behind the clutch pilot bearing) the charges will be in the same ball park. In fact, if the "freeze" plug is bad, you might want to also replace the rear seal since you have things apart. Always replace the pilot bearing whenever you have access to it. Also, while the trannie is out, the flywheel and pressure plate surfaces should be inspected for wear and flatness and the friction material on the clutch should be checked out for wear/thickness.

Yeah shouldnt cost too much $$ to fix it. Funny thing is that I broke off the top half of the sending unit last year while installing an intake manifold, I guess the rest of it just decided to blow out or something. I had them go back and double check that it was definitely the sender and they verified it twice. Another weird thing was they said that normally they wont even touch a car that has nitrous installed, what the hell does that matter?
