Default P/N stamped on GM part is wrong?

I need to get a new rear cover as I screwed up my stock one trying to remove the seal. The P/N stamped on the cover is 12559287 but I can not find this part at GMpartsdirect or paceparts.com. I went to the LS1 part numbers thread on here and it listed the P/N as 12572014. Is this number an updated rear cover?

I am suprised they even put the part numbers on at all anymore. Everytime a GM engineer makes a slight change, he has to change the part number. Keeping the part number on a part just adds cost to make a change. The dealer can probably give you the current part number based on the old part number.
