I had 10K when the stock lifters first went. A little damage to the cam but not bad. Replaced 4 lifters with melling lifters and inspected the other stockers. Reassembled and ran another 6K miles. Both the melling and the stock (previously inspected) lifters were showing wear and spalling now.

My cam did not show any signs of being soft. If anything I still believe my cam was ground incorrectly or did not receive a final pass and was left rough cut.

Let me ask, did you have the ticking or strange noises? Also, does it look like that cam got discolored from heat?

This is starting to make me real nervous, cause when I pulled the stock cam out it looked just like yours did on a couple lobes.

So if I understand you correct you had the same spalling on a stock cam? When and if you tear down, so you think you can take some lifter bore measurements on your block?

I have heard nothing about a root cause of these component problems. Who said the cams were soft?

Chris, will see what I can do. I am not 100% sure I will tear it down, but I am leaning towards it. Depends on what Futral will do for me.

I have a Cam Motion ground cam and it was purchased sometime before Jan-Feb 05. It may have been ground in late 04. Ill have to check my cam card (sheet) when I get home to see the actual production date. FWIW I have stock lifters, 46K miles, and when I checked my preload with the TR 7.400 PRs I was good to go but now I want to double-tripple check it. Sucks cause I had my heads off about a month ago and now Im kicking myself for not pulling a lifter or two to check them, then again I only have about 2K on the new cam.

I have my actual grind # from Cam Motion so hopefully they can nail down a batch # or date if the problem is in fact materials.

FAWK. To think.. these are the same materials used in ALL (?) of their grinds?

Where is Futral Motorsports or Candy. I remember when they would be in on this within the first page. I know they still get on here, I'm just wondering why they don't respond.

Im pretty sure stockers have .090 - .100 preload. I know mine are down atleast that far and Im running .011 more preload than stock.

yeah the people i have talked to say 0.080-0.120 range for preload depending on who i talk with.

no problems with my daily driver f13 with about 20-25k miles. Early 05/late 04 Cam with 7.4 pushrods.

I think I remember hearing that they've been having issues with the hurricane since their based in LA.

I am about .75-80 with 7.35 PR's, I have to look it up were it came out at. I have yet to look at he cam since I have less than <5k on it bought in Late May possibly June and shipped in I think it was late June early July.

Guys, please put the purchase date and details such as PR length and if you measured your preload or not (if so what was it?) and keep this thread updated.

My friend and I both bought cams during the "bad batch" and neither of us have had problems. Futral did all of our work.

How many people with failures have had the correct length pushrods? How many people ported/upgraded their oil pumps? How many people upgraded/replaced lifters during the cam change? How many people set the correct preload? It seems to me that it's not manufacturing error, but simply user error that causes this problem.

When my lifters were changed during my head swap, Allan never mentioned to me that my lifters/cam was fucked.... simply because they weren't... and they shouldn't be unless installed incorrectly.

I'm having a hard time buying all of this simply because Futral Motorsports isn't the only company that uses Cam Motion. I'm willing to bet that hundreds of other vendors do, too (including Thunder Racing). Why haven't we heard about failures in these cams? Simply because there IS no manufacting failure, but it has been blown out of proportion on this board. It's a shame, but **** rolls downhill.
