Default LS1 or LS6???? What should I do?

My warrenty company is giving me a brand new ls1 engine for my 2002 Trans Am Ws6. Should I just take the LS1 and add a couple of bolt ons like headers, pulleys or drop another $1100 of my own money to put a ls6 in? If I do go with the LS6 is it worth $1100 for 75 more hp? Will I have to change the ECM? What are some other options I can go with? I still have the old LS1 and the only thing that I can't use from it is the block. The total amount that I have to spend is $4100 from the warrenty company and about $1500 of my own money. Any help I can get with this would be great thanks. Also I live in CA so what ever I get I have to be able to pass smog.

LS6 service engine for $5200

You must be pretty new cause LS1 and the LS6 are pretty much the same motor except top end. I would just stick with the LS1 and just build on it and just get a LS6 intake and a bigger cam and heads. If you plan on doing mods there is no benifit in getting an LS6.

I am new. So what should I get for a LS1 to get some decent HP gains for around $1500 while the engine is out and still pass smog?

Depends on what you want to do with your car man. LS6 won't eat up much oil like the LS1, I see you have a 2002, so it should come with the LS6 intake. 1100 for a lil better cam, better flowing heads. I don't know what other differences there are. Price cam's and heads and see if its a good idea. If you don't plan on going with a better set of heads anytime soon, I would get the LS6, change the cam out, put a big one in, and sell the cam and valvetrain on here for like 200 bucks or so.

Thanks man. I will look in to it. I heard that if you change your cam out that it is hard to get your car to pass smog. Is that true?

Depending on what cam you get it will be very difficult, almost impossible to pass. A smaller cam like a 224/224 or something around there will pass with a good tune. As you get up into the bigger cams, your cahnces of passing pretty much decrease exponetially. Also, how good of a tune weighs on whether you will be able to pass emissions as well. On the topic of ls1 vs. ls6, I would just get the ls1 and put the other money into building it up. If you can find a decent priced built motor off here that would be great also. Good luck!
