Default Visually discerning the LS1, LS6 oil pumps. ?

On my '98 LS1 car, it came with an pod mounted oil pressure gauge. Why would the previous owner do such? I'm thinking maybe he may have installed a revised oil pump and the gauge at the same time. If you know of a way to look at an installed oil pump and see if it's the OEM one or an LS6, please let me know.

I'd hate to replace an oil pump that's only 2 years old.

I just replaced my original 98 LS1 oil pump with a modded LS6. The only differences are the internal port job and possibly a shim on the spring. So no, I could not "see" any differences. 98 pumps have been noted as unreliable by folks. If you have the front cover off for the cam, why not? The are not that expensive. Changing that 10 mm bolt that holds the pickup tube to the pump is challenging.
