BINGO!!! we have a winner!
rather then guess if its bent, get a dial indicator... spin the crank with it on there and SEE if its bent.
then check the thrust bearing, also with the dial indicator.
you can do all this in the car...
btw, assuming you dropped everything on it, fully assembled, just right to put the most breaking force on it....... id still bet you $50 the crank or motor was not damaged.
its probly just the balancer.
if you want to be smart and sure and check everything, do what cjs27410 and i said... that CHECKS everything that could be damaged... no need to disassemble the entire motor.. LOL.
Yeah I agree, establish that at least the crank is damaged before you get someone ripping it apart. You should have no problems using the dial indicator without pulling the engine from the vehicle.
I am going to have to replace my ring on my LS1 so I think I am getting new piston, rods, and crank. will I have to rebalance it. If so how do you do that? This is my first time tearing a engine all the way apart so any help will be great.

it's a lot easier to pull the balancer and set up a runout gauge than pull the engine and have him disassemble the whole thing.
Me and one of my friends hit a tree doing around 50 mph or so (I'm not real sure, we were passed out) and it looked like the crank was bent but it had only kicked the balancer sideways. We pulled it out of the car, fixed the balancer and dropped it in my dads station wagon. It runs great, he drives it to work every day. Oh yea, we also added a nitrous kit to make up for the weight of the wagon.
I say check it before you spend all that $$$$$$

UPDATE: Well, I got my engine back last week. I still can't run it because now I am missing the exhaust housing to my turbo (it never ends!) Anyway, my builder gave me a heluva deal. The crank WAS bent, 30-thousandths, and it ruined one bearing, the first one, where it cut into it from being bent. Unfortunately, I had to buy a full set as I couldn't order just one. My engine builder checked the entire engine and the mains and they are fine. I paid $190 to FIX the crank under the deal that if it couldn't be fixed I would pay nothing. The machinest said it was fine and my engine builder rechecked it as well and assured me that it was fine. He feels the head gaskets are fine as well so I got by with only $500 for a rebuild AND a full set of coated main bearings AND the crank machine work! I basically only paid $200 for the labor to rebuild the motor. I have to say I am very releived. He will defenitely be geting a x-mas card from me this year. lol. Thanks to all for the advice.
