I have used the tdc method on many old Chevy 350s with zero lash setting. The ls1 isNOT an adjustable valve train, whether the valve is fully open or closed, the trunion moves inside the rocker arm, the rocker will still torque to 22ft lbs. When the car is started the lifter pumps up and sets the tension. IM not a good teacher and cannot explain it any better. Good friend owns a performance shop, I sat there and watched the set the valves by just torquing to 22 ft lbs, rotating and checking, this is on a twin Turbo LS7. Other speed shops use the exact same procedure. I've seen 50,000 plus miles on some of these same cars with no issues. I'm not going to debate in here, I use this procedure, most shops do, and will continue to do so. Have a good debate, static, gross, net whatever, its a non adjustable valve train.

If that were the case, then why for would GM go to the trouble of writing a specific procedure in the service manual...?

Well, its an old school method, so they chose to put it in the manual. Like many other procedures theres many ways to get to the same result. The GM manual also says to remove the intake manifold to change the oil pressure sensor on a c5, when theres no need to remove it.

Last time, im not saying the TDC method is wrong, i used to use it all the time. Theres another way that works and is much quiker, and widely used by professionals.
Aloha
