I agree completely. I was scheming up a way for him to cut a lil' cost by re-using the stock crank and using forged for the rest. I've seen plenty of hp being used reliably with the stock/forged set-up. I agree if you're going to spend the coin on the crank you might as well use a 4" stroke regardless of the stock or 6.0 block.
In theory I agree guys, but $$$ rule.
I can rebuilt a complete 347 for $5000 +/-
A 402 LS2 will cost $8000 +/-
The 370 iron about $6000+/-
The 383 option would be like $6000+/- (if I keep my heads)
Bottom line, 347 cubes will be way more economical.

I feel your pain, I did a 3rd and 4th gear pull yesterday, to see how my car pulled at higher speeds... soemthign didn't feel right in 4th, I look behind me, adn it's a spy hunter smoke screen... I pull over, dipstick is blown out, etc.etc. I'm not sure which one or sones let go, or even why.. but it's done. Sucks, I just put the heads on, car's only got 18900 miles on it, never sprayed it, stock bottom end is toasted. I didn't want to build a new mtoor yet, I was hoping to get my th400 swap done and try fir mid to low 11's this year, but that's all over.. I'm on the sidelines now.. and having the same debate, to just do a forged 346 and put all my stuff on it, or do like I always wanted to do, a big CI motor.
Stuff never happens when you are ready for it...

Well, it looks like i'll be going 383. Got a good deal from Shafiroff and I trust their work, I've used their BBC's before and their work is top notch.
Also looking at a Edelbrok Victor JR EFI for high rpm feeding.
Now the wait

I figured I can always upgrade to better heads down the line.
The block is the supporting platform of all mods

, I wish now I didn't sell those big chamber AFR 225 I had last year. I got tired of seeing them just sitting there and was offered a deal I couldn't refuse. It is not often that you sell a part for profit. That is how good the rep of those are. Some guy is using them on his LS1 turbo sand buggy. 383 is a good upgrade for the money... if you're going to forge the engine, might as well get a few extra cubes out of the deal for less than the price of a FAST LSX90 intake.
I just wonder how much of a price difference there would be if you sold your stock block (even damaged it may be worth something to a someone looking for a core to install Darton sleeves in) and bought an LS2 402 short-block... you can pick those up cheap, even with a Callies crank.
