Default Lifter preload?

I'm helping a buddy with a H/C swap and we're installing new Melling lifters as well.....I've heard some of you guys talk about 'lifter preload' and proper setup. Is this something we need to be concerned with? How is it measured?

If you need any other details on the setup let me know.

Search for preload. 10 million threads on this subject. Several ways to do it depending on whether you want to use checker springs, adjustable pushrod and/or a dial indicator.
