Default TREX cam way to much?

Hey guys, I am in need of some assitance here. I have friend who just bought an LS1 Swapped 1994 FD Rx-7.

My friend who owns this car is a novice to high performance cars especially ones with nearly 400 HP and weighing in at 2900#s.

The car currently has a TREX cam from Thunder Racing and he and I both agree that it is more than likely way to much cam for him and for the car to be any kind of steetable and so we have been looking for a replacement cam.

I have seen some good results out of the GM hotcams, but wanted to get all of ya'lls take on a good cam that will have a moderate ammount of lope to it, still make more power then the stocker all while being able to idle at 500 RPM and not die or even break valve springs like it has in the past.

So let me know what you think, as any help will be most appreciated.

Any of the 224 cams from Comp XER Lobes are great friendly cams that give good gains across the board and sound great.

Well maybe we need to tune before we go and swap cams again. At any rate the deciding factor will be after he drives it and after I drive it.

In the mean time it is really helping having all these opinions. It is always nice to have others with experience with different cams chime in because it gives me more options to present to him. I have been out of the game for a while so I am catching back up with what cams people are using now.

I streeted this cam every day. The tune is really what makes the car streetable or not.

according to Geoff, this cam can be made to drive well with a GOOD tune, but for optimum performance needs 4000+ stall, 4.10 gears, very free flowing exhaust (like open headers), etc. Without all that, and the ability to spin 7000+ RPM, you might as well go with something smaller because it will work better.

So far the car has LT's but I have no clue what diameter the primaries are. That then feeds into a Qtec cutout, but the rest of the exhaust after that is basicly stock RX-7 trim.

He has HP tuners that came with the car, but I am not to sure about just diving in and tuning the car. I may suggest to him that we have it tuned first at a professional dyno shop and then go from there.

600 bucks is what it costs to get it done there, but after buying a new cam at around 300 bucks, having to rent or buy tools, having to buy miscellanious parts and then also basicly having to pull the car apart for a week or two that might now be a bad option.

I will let you all know.

It's more streetable then you think it is. I'm just getting started with my tune and it doesn't bother me one bit driving the car. It rarely surges as is and once you tune the idle it will drive 10 times better.

it should be more than 300$ for the cam. i think they sell it for 400$ alone, not to mention you should get some better springs and pushrods so u dont destroy them later on.

Well I think I have him convinced that we atleast need to try and resolve the problem with some tuning before we pull the cam out. First and formost we have to take delivery of the car before we can make any decsisions. After I have listened to the car and driven it I will be able to make a much better judgement as to what needs to be done to it as well.

Thanks everyone for all your help, I will keep you all updated as to what happens with the car.
