The rear crank seal doesn't have a spring.

Go to the parts store and look at a timing cover seal. You can compare the spring you have to the spring on the timing cover seal. I think you'll then agree that's what it is.

so as i was sitting here studying for my final i started getting curious. I grabbed a stock valve stem seal that came out of my car before the cam swap. On the end of the seal was a spring, so i slipped the spring off and broke it just like the spring i found in my oil pan was broke. And here are the results.........

when i installed my dual valve springs i was told to use valve stem seals from a 98-99 LS1 b/c they weren't molded into the seats like the 2002s were. (i couldn't use the stock seats with the duals). So my question is....how the hell did these seals with less than 10,000 miles on them bust when the stock ones lasted 75,000? Is the diameter of the valve stems larger on 02s than the 98-99s? i am going to pull the plugs and remove the valve covers to see where it came from when i get done with my final today.

In the 2 cam installs I've done and the 4 timing cover gaskets I've had in my hands. None of them have had springs on them. I didn't see a spring on the front main seal either ... unless I just missed something all together.

Bro, its the spring that goes around the top of your valve before the main valve springs go on. I had 4 of those sitting around in my head when I took the valve covers off. It only has to do with the seal, it has nothing to do with dropping a valve.

These were my broken MAIN valve springs, the little springs you found are under the silver round spring retainer, you can't see them when the main springs are installed. Take that silver round retainer off and the little spring is wrapped around the tip of the valve.

i think you misunderstood what i said. I figured out what the spring came from finally this morning. I even showed some pictures a few posts up. I never thought it was the valve springs. I promise i'm not stupid but thanks for your help!
