Default ported 98 heads??

Why do I always see people wanting to get rid of their 98 heads? I know some upgrade to 99-02 heads because of the center bolt valve cover design and it makes it easier to change plugs and the coil packs are mounted differently. is there any other reason why people go to new style heads? The reason I'm asking is because I want to get a set of cheap 98 heads and have a good port job done to them by my local engine builder, would I see a better gain if I got 99-02 heads and had them ported...or is the only reason why people go to 99-02 heads is because of the center bolt design and the other things listed above? thanks for the help.

The valves are a little better with the later heads, and you cannot use the MLS or steel head-gaskets with the 98's.
Other than that they are fine in my book. It's normally not a big deal if they're going to be ported and get a good valvejob anyway.

I have a set for sale if interested. Comes with gaskets and head bolts etc. 15k on them. I put down 384 rwhp/382 rwtq with a tr224 cam. Go her to see them. www.ls1miata.net/gallery Top section 3 page. You will also see the dyno results with that combo.

Why can't you use MLS with 98 heads? I have had a set of cometic MLS on my car for a while with no problems.

There's a notch in the middle outboard side of the head that prevents the steel gaskets from sealing the water-jacket. Water pours out.

I don't have a notch, it must have been removed by previous owner of the car. My ported heads came with the car.
