What is the best oil filter to use on our cars?

 

I use the mobil one longer oil filter....I used to use fram, or the regular A/C delco...

I think K&N makes an oil filter for our cars now... <img border="0" title="" alt="[Smile]" src="gr_stretch.gif" />

 

From what I've gathered over time...

I use Fram and AC Delco. No problems with either.

 

I'm not so sure about running these high efficiency filters (Mobil 1, PureONE, Ultraguard) on a very hard driven car. I prefer the K&N oil filter myself, as it's main objective is to provide more oil flow. I believe that is more important for engine wear on hard driven cars than having the smallest particles removed.

 

I,am using the ac delco PF59 long filter.
it is supposed to have a better anti drainback.
I can also use the entire 6 quarts.

 

I've been using the M1-206 filter since my car was new and have had no complaints.

 

I agree with Patman, full flow is more important than full filter! PF59 should be on all except maybe extremely lowered Fbods and vettes. I stick a magnet on the end of my filter also(good idea)
another important fact is since LS1 priority oiling goes to lifter valley as well as bearings, any type of valvetrain failure that leads to thrown lifter can lead to immediate flow loss to rods and mains. That means shut it off as soon as any noise is detected . A Rev kit will be helpful in keeping this situation from arising.

 

I kind of like the K&N HP oil filter myself. It's only a few bucks more then the others, and it does offer a higher flow rate. Along with Castrol full synthetic oil, good to go another 3000 miles............. Stupid question... Do you guys think 5w50 full synthetic oil is ok to run... It seems like you hear more valvetrain noise with it....

 

A few weeks ago, I discovered that Donaldson makes a Blackwing oil filter. I ordered one. It cost $15. OOOOUUUCCCCHH! The next time I change oil, I'm going to install it.

 

5w50 is way too thick! At operating temp that 50wt oil is not suited to these engines, and most likely does not provide as much protection because it's thickness creates more heat and too much resistance. I believe the LS1 shows it's best engine wear with an oil in the 12-13cst at 100c range, or in other words a high 30wt to low 40wt oil.

 

I ditched the stock spin-on filters when I first bought my 99'. I no longer use any kind of spin on filter. The don't filter, and they create pressure that kills power. I use a Canton Racing Products remote oil filter #25-100, with Aeroquip Startlite hose, with a billet adapter on the block mount.

 

Those Canton Racing filters are expensive though. Almost $100 for the unit then $10 or so for each cartridge. But the flow ratings on them are incredible (45-60 GPM!)
