Hey guys,
I am about to add a set of QTP LT's, custom catted Y, and an LS6 intake with a full dyno tune.

I was also considering adding in a mild cam (streetable defined as sounding close to stock and emissions friendly) to take advantage of my full tune.

My local speed shop recommended a 224/228 cam and I have heard some good things about the TSP Cheatr cam. Will either of these not have a large loping sound and still be streetable with decent MPG?

Thanks for any suggestions and if you have links to personal cam vids let me have em!

Actually it is Thunder CheaTR cam. That is a good cam from the decription you gave.
Something more reliable at the long run is the LPE (Lingenfelter) GT2-3 cam.
Another powerfull Stealth cam is the Stealth II from MTI (224/220, .581/.581, 116+0)

With your setup the 224/228 will probably give you more hp. After your car adjusts to it, with a proper tune, it will be very streetable, barely noticeable, and heads friendly, when you decide to go that route. My buddy has that cam in his SS. With heads and gears he's @ 410+hp. His has extremely good street manners, and nice track times on street tires.

TR224 114LSA is perfect all around daily driver cam. It will also pass emissions.

Don't fool yourself, you need a retune after the cam install..........

Shop is 100% correct....224/228 .581 .588@114 is the perfect street cam.

Shop gave 1 option, there is others.
FYI if your state involve sniff test 224/228 will have more difficulty to pass with -2* overlap.

With just a baseline tune, im loving the streetability of my 228r from tsp. It has a few quirks but in 10 days or so all of those will be fixed when it gets tuned. The power is nice.

For your description, the 224/228 is not a good idea. It doesn't sound stock, and usually won't pass the sniffer. You'd be better off with something along the lines of the TR224 on a 114 LSA. Even this cam does not sound stock though. If you want a stock sounding idle, then you might want to look into the CheaTR cam or GT2-3 cams.

I have the TR224. Passed NYand VA sniffer, and does not sound stock either on a 114. Its a good fun cam, but there are larger and bigger cams out there now.

Crap only a couple years again the TR224 was the big dog on the porch

East Side Performance also recommended a 224/228 cam for me, so I picked up a used Cartek 2x, (.581/.588 113lsa) to go w/ my heads. Awesome power, great street use, and damn its fast.

Yeah I would like the stealth approach to ugrading. I will be puttig in new Comp 918 springs and keeping the stock heads for now, and upgrading those later. The current pile of performance upgrades lying in my room has already takin' a good chunk of the ol' mod o' account.

But from what I hear, the Stealth cam is nice. The input is great guys I really apreciate it. Anyone else have any suggestions?

You might try to go to GM and try one of thier Hotcams. They have some really good grinds for what you are looking for. For some reason everyone underestimates the factory HP cams.

I think alot of you guys are forgetting about his request:
1-Sounds close to stock
2-Pass emissions

Most of the cams listed DON'T sound close to stock, and WON'T pass the sniffer. The 224/228 doesn't sound anything like stock, and neither does the hotcam. One thing I've never understood about the stealth II cam, is even though it isn't very noticeable, it's a reverse split. In order to optimize a reverse split like this, you'll want longtubes, offroad pipe and a cut out....we'll there goes your stealth.

here in illinois 224 cars pass. also he can get a 224 with a 114 lsa or even a 115 lsa and raise the idle. it will sound pretty damm near stock

I won't ever take out my TR224/114. It shocks people when they find out I am running 431rwhp and a nice 410rwtq with a good tune. You can tell its in there since I have the idle at 850rpm, but it drives much like stock until you get on it.

I too remember when the TR224 was a big cam . Now its been in my car for almost 4 years and by todays standards, its considered a baby cam now. But this baby still turns heads.
