Could this be linked to a tuning issue?
Also as a side note a replacement junkyard motor is now in it's place but we are unable to get it to start.

Everything seems to be hooked up properly but we can't figure out what the deal is. I think HPtuners was used to tune the computer as well as remove the Mass Air Flow meter. Can these motors even be run without a MAF?

It looks like your intake valve broke, dropped into the cylinder and bounced around causing some major damage. Why it broke I couldn't begin to guess.

Motors can run without the MAF but only briefly. A truck I was working on wouldn't come above idle with the MAF removed.

Are you sure the MAF is disabled in the PCM? If its just unplugged it want run worth a ****. You actually have to turn it off with HPtuners.

you can run a car without an maf if its SD tuned, if not then nah. Plus I dont see the huge advantage of SD tuning unless your making wicked amounts of HP.

Me either. When I saw that the car had now MAF I immediately said WTF.

I believe it is tuned out using HP Tuners, but that is all a guess right now. We are being told that VATS is the reason why it won't start. The car will crank and run for a second or two but then die. I honestly have no clue what to make of it, and my friend doesn't either. He is trying to get ahold of the previous owner so that he can get the code so that he can use HPtuners since that was part of the deal with the car.

Car will run with or without a maf, either way. If the maf is not detected, the PCM will resort to speed density mode and run off the VE table. It might not run as good but it will run.

And no, I don't think a tune has anything to do with that or why your car won't start.

You can disable VATS with HPtuners. That sounds like the problem. My TA did the same thing. Did the previous guy lock the tune or something?

It has nothing at all to do with the tune or the MAF.

The eyebrows on the pistons tell the story.
It was either caused by an over-rev, or running the engine with the camshaft out of time. The bent valve eventually broke off and fell in.

That is exactly what I was thinking. The cam was a Thunder Racing T-Rex, and there was an issue with this happening about two weeks prior to my friend taking possession of the car. I had posted a question reguarding the Trex cam earlier...well it appears that it was the culprit, but I wanted to ask some others what they thought and if anything else might have been to blame.

As the car sits it now has a new Junkyard motor with 7X K miles on it.

Update on the car, we are still working out quite a few gremlins with reguards to the electrical system. Apparently from what the shipping company told my friend the car ran fine until it was pulled off the trailer to move another car. After that, it wouldn't crank and had the new engine dropped in....problems problems problems. This is why I never buy other peoples projects. It becomes very clear now why the previous owner wanted to get out of the car so bad.

Ouch!!!

Yeah, it will run if your VE table is close enough to dialed it. You may have an initial bog though before it uses the SD calculations.

Smacked into the piston. I see freshly made smilies on all the pistons shown in the photo.
