Wow, you were a big help in this thread. Instead of telling everyone they are doing everything wrong, if you know, why not post the correct way?

Found a good visual reference to this on Autozone's site. However, it says to tighten the balancer bolt to 74ftlbs. Not sure if this is correct for a tighten-to-yield bolt. It would be interesting to note the actual torque achieved once going to 37 ftlbs then 180 degrees.
For the fear of god, please don't reuse the old bolt! Tighten to yield means once you remove it, it's broken.

They way I've done the last 3 went like this.
I madea 2 flute chaser using an old bolt like suggested above. Not much to clean, but better to be safe.
I bought and used the over-priced Kent-Moore tool (you can use a threaded rod) to install the new balancer until it got tight. I removed the Kent-Moore tool and threaded in the old bolt, cleaned up, some GM threadlock around the head. Then I tightend it to 240ft/lbs. Removed it and installed the new bolt. Torqued that to 37ft/bls. Then marked it with a Sharpie and turned it another 140 degrees.

heres a good tip for everyone that works wonders. This is by far the best way to install a balancer.
-first lube the inside of the pully with a little oil
-set pulley on crank as strait as possible
_install TWO washers on the threaded rod or longer bolt and put grease between the washers,it will act as a bearing and make it simple.
_Turn the crank on about 3/4 " and then use the old bolt with the two washers again and torque it to 240.
_Put a hair of neversieze on the threads too, they will thank you for it.
The grease between the two washers is the key here,it works great.

11.99$ from car quest....this is a must for every pully install!!!!
Best $12 i have ever spend, along with $4 for a longer crank bolt.

we just broke off about 3" of balancer bolt inside the crank on my '04 GTO doing a cam install. The guy who is working on my car is an MET and is building a jig of some sort to help us drill it out. Im keeping my fingers crossed. I dont want to have to get a new crank.
