Default Oil pump swap

How smart or i guess dumb of me is it to not swap out my oil pump when i do my cam swap here in the next 2 weeks? The oil pump i got now reads good oil pressure. Idling hot it and in gear it reads 40 PSI and cruising 70 on the highway it reads about 55-60 PSI. The car has 60k on it and as far as i know the oil pump hasnt been changed. I hardly drive the car and it usually sees more highway than city driving. Yea im gonna be down there already but why change something that is good right? or not?

The oil pump is very simple. You can take the front cover off and inspect the gerotors without removing the actual pump housing. You can probably even remove and inspect the pressure releif valve. If all looks well, might as well keep it.

A brand new LS6 pump is only $90. Why not replace it? Especially if you plan on taking the original out and inspecting it. I wouldn't want a $90 part to ruin a $4000 motor. Just my $0.02.

It's simply your call. 60K on the car and it's not a daily driven car, good history of making good pressure...I'd probably leave the old one in it.

If you're changing the cam now, there is a good chance you'll change it again down the road when the car has more miles on it. Probably a good idea to change it then.

I changed mine when I did the H/C swap simply because mine had quite a few miles on it. 106k to be exact. Put a new LS6 pump in it and replaced the o-ring too.

Now makes ~60 psi on cold start up...and hovers around 40 at idle.

I'd think it over and figure out what you're comfortable with.

He wouldnt have to remove it in order to inspect it. Just take the front cover off. Its much much much easier than removing the pump itself cause you dont have to drop the oil pan, get to the pickup bolt, or futz with the O ring.

That's pretty good pressure, to think about changing it. But on the other hand whats $90. It's up to you. I have the ZO6 ported oil pump and I love seeing the oil pressure up there so I can drive hard and know I don't have anything to worry about.

YES I would change it. Not because of the mileage but because of the year of the car. Besides if you are changing the chain/sprockets you will have to take out the bastard oil pump pickup tube screw anyway....might as well change the pump.

I would leave it alone. You have good pressure and not that many miles. All parts in an engine are proven by lasting... and any new part always has to prove it is not an improperly manufactured part and you also have a risk of not putting pump in correctly. If it is not broke do not fix it.
