Default O ring question

Are the O rings used for oil control made out of anything special? I mean if you had to, could you just get a similar sized O ring from the hardware store and use it?
Damn dealer screwed up my order for the rear oil gallery plunger/plug that has the O ring on it.
I didn't get one with my 6.0 and I'm thinking about pulling the one out of the LS1 and just replacing the O ring if it looks bad.
I was going to use the one out of the 5.3 but I forgot to pull it before I shipped it.

I'm not talking about the O ring that goes on the oil pump pickup. This is for the rear plunger that goes behind the rear cover. The dealership says they do not sell the O ring separate.
