honestly for the money you will spend on parts and putting it together yourself why not buy on of the sponsors forged 346/347 shortblocks? I believe FFHP/TSP/SDPC all have forged 346/347 shortblocks for around $2700-$2800, and they come fully assembled, blueprinted, and balanced. That way you know its done right and dont have to worry as it will be warranteed. Thats what im going to do when my shortblock dies on me. Also, if your going NA your going to want as much compression as possible so no dished pistons.

my story is this:
broke a rod ON STARTUP!, it pushed thru block
althoug it took a LOOOONG time my motor is a blast.
I already hace CNC stageII heads and a 217-229 114lsa lunati cam lying around.
1) buy this two books from ebay about hi perf ls1 engines
there ale a lot of tricks, timesavers, and a lot of pictures, you`ll learn a lot

2) drop the engine from bellow: I took mime from top..... a CLEAR VIEW OF HELL!!!!

3) buy ARP stuf, head bolt, mains, buy the best quality for rods! (expensive!)
4) bought 1s6 block new in ebay $650
5 bought set of "almost new" ZO6 pistons w/rods it came perfect $170
6 race bearings all over (specially rod bearings) summit racing
7 blueprinted the block to "tight specs" (came loose from new)
8 new porter polished (I shimmed) oil pump
9 buy N*E*W* torque wrench
the only unusual tool I had to buy was a long reach 8mm-1/2" socket to use w/torque ratchet to tighten the rockers. and the aforementioned GM quick release for gas hose
lots of diesel and rags to clean up, used the same gaskets all around exept new crank seals (be carefull when installing) a new cadillac timing chain.

total spent, around $3500 because I did all from pulling the engine to installing from bottom (I can send pictures of the whole process) in 18 months from breakup to start again. Im a Cheap bastard, and always try to cut corners, BUT very very concious with the quality of my work!!!!!

I hope this helps

Yeah I'm pricing out the shortblocks right now and you are absolutely right about it all. IF I can try to the car up high enough I will pull from the bottom but more then likely from the top. In the long run I'm leaning towards the short block but it all come down to a long time saving which sucks.

exactly and im sure you can do it right yourself, but is it worth all the time and effort to do so? I was planning on doing my cam installed myself but after pricing out the cost of installation it was well worth the extra money to have it professionally installed, with a warranty, than it was to install myself and "hope" everything was done correctly. This way your sure it was done right th eifrst time and if not you have the warranty backing up your shortblock.

Yeah that happened with my cam too, I almost pulled the trigger on doing it my self but NEW ERA gave me a deal to do so it got done without the what if headaches. This project will not till the shortblock arrives and is installed.
