Default head gaskets

I recently added prc's cnc s1 heads to my 98 ls1 and was wondering if I used the right gaskets. I used the mls ones that were on there originally. I've done some research and am just confused now. It appears as though some coolant is missing, but it runs ok.

You didn't re-use the old ones?

No, I didn't reuse the same ones, but new replacements for the 98'. I've heard some people say these are ok,and yet others have said I need the newer ones-03? and up.

Your '98 LS1 didn't originally have MLS gaskets on it... should've been the graphites. If you're still running '98 style heads you must use the stock gaskets or else its gonna leak water. If you're running '99-up heads on a '98 block you'll be fine with the newer style gaskets.

Basically...

ONLY RUN '98 GASKETS WITH '98 HEADS!!! (or else its gonna leak)

I guess they were the graphite ones originally,my bad. So, I just ordered more of the same. I have 98'graphite gaskets with the newer heads. Should I have the newer mls gaskets then or doesn't it matter?

Yes, you should have got the MLS gaskets that came on the later model fbody. I am using gaskets that came on the 02 cars on mine.

I believe graphites should work fine with the newer heads though... I know some guys that will only run them. Is it losing coolant while running or what? I'm confused as to what your original question was.

BTW- nice runs in that LS1 3rd gen... wish you were closer so we could line them up... that would be a fun/close race. Well, not anymore... I'm building a new setup

Well, I got concerned about the gaskets after I read a post here about someone who had a problem after installing prc heads on their car. They weren't sure they used the correct gaskets and had lots of coolant coming out the exhaust. Turns out that prc ported through the water jackets and they sent him new stuff. When I tore my car apart, I was only planning on a valve job on the original heads until I saw how cheap the prc's were, and I had the head gaskets already so that's what I used. I noticed that the coolant was low a few times I checked it, but not real bad. I never saw any out the exhaust. The car has been down for 3 weeks as I try to straighten out a broken rear so I haven't been able to mess with it. Anyway,it's probably ok, I mean I've raced it and all with no problems(a little slower than I thought though)so,I'll check it over real good when I get it back. I appreciate the help. Always nice to see fellow 3rd gen ls1's. I really wanted a 6 speed. Good luck with the new setup.

After my head swap, it took about a month of adding coolant in 1/2 -> 1 cup increments, before it was totally topped off and quit going down. Just make sure you crank your heater up, so the coolant will go through your core and get all the air out of it...just pulling the hose off the TB is not enough...it help quite a bit, but there will still be air trapped in the block/heads, which need to be worked out.

I got head work and valve upgrades and used the new 98 gaskets on my care with the ARP bolts. I have had not Issues. You'll be fine.
