Default question about engine noises.

ok i got a sound that sounds like maybe pistons slap but it doesn't do it when you first fire it up. when it first gets cranked up in the morning it is smooth well beside the cam but no noises. after about 30-45 seconds sometime a minute of it running it will start making this taping kinda noise i guess then when it get to operating temp it goes away for the most part you can still kinda hear it if you listen close enough. so what gives is this normal piston slap or something else? i just don't recall this noise when i first droped the engine in. then i went on a trip to arkansas and i guess i burnt some oil and it got a ittle low and it started tapping after some lucas oil it stoped. then when i got back up to maine where it was hella cold it started doing this.

Sorry I can't be of real help, maybe someone else can.

I can tell you this: That doesn't sound very good.

No problems. That is normal piston slap. Ive had exactly what you describe for the last 70K miles. Ive had the heads off twice and the bores still look good. No apparent scoring or damage. Ive noticed that actually a thinner oil like m1 5w30 quieted it down compared to a thicker oil like GC or M1 SUV 5w40. I prefer to use the thicker oil and just wait for the slap to go away before i drive. Anyway, you dont have anything in particular to worry about.

Boy, I forget how happy I am with my 98 in that I don't have to worry about piston slap.

That would drive me nuts.

so it is piston slap even though it doesn't start as soon as the eng is started? it does go away for the most part after warm up.

Yes, I always though it was strange that it didnt start as soon as the engine started, but usually 30 seconds later, but im certain its merely slap. I tracked mine down to number 7 with the wooden dowel to chin trick.

Sadly thats not necessarily guaranteed. Some people state that the harder aluminum in forged motors make them slap even more. Ive heard both sides though, so maybe its still a crapshoot.
