Default Getting heads checked?

I got some Absolute Speed stage 2 5.3L heads from a good member here. I have been told to take them to a machine shop to "get them checked" but nobody can tell me what to tell them to check.

Also, the guy I bought them off of doesn't know how far they were milled, if any. How can I find this out? I'd like to know the cc's of the combustion chambers.

I know someone will chime in asking why I bought them. It was a good deal, they'll sell for what I have in them at least, and they ran fine on his car.

Well they probably mean have them checked for any cracks or to see if they are warped or anything like that. As far as cc'ing the chambers you can have a shop do that. Not sure of cost as I have always cc'd mine myself. I have found the easiest way is to set the head upside down on a table and prop it up where the deck surface is pretty level. Clean the surface good and spread a thin to moderate layer of lithium grease around the combustion chamber. Use a peice of 4 inch by 4 inch plexiglass that has a hole drilled in it towards one side of it. Place the hole at the top side of the chamber ( closest to the intake ports ). Put a spark plug in that chamber so you can fill it with water or rubbing alcohol. Suck up the liquid with a syringe and inject it into the hole of the plexiglass. If your using a small syringe i.e 20cc's then keep track of how much you use. When the chamber is full all the way to the plexiglass you will know how many cc's it took you to fill it.

I see. Good info. I'll take care of that. What about checking the mill on them? I guess if I knew the stock depth of one of the bolt holes, I could use a micrometer to check it. Could the shop to that too?

Once you find out the cc's of the chambers you should be able to tell if they have been milled or not.
