Default Pro and Cons......Iron block vs Alum.

Well has my luck would have it, it is time for a new motor, lost #5 piston. Looking for a bit of guidance on a choice of block. What are the pros and cons for alum vs a Iron block.

List em if you got them.

As for weight, it is not a concern for me.

I know that you meant "iron"

RASP is a big one. The AL blocks tend to have more resonance than an iron block.

I think you mean iron block, not steel.

Depends on what your goals are. Aluminum is lighter, more expensive. Iron is cheaper, more robust, heavier, easily found.

Ok corrected all but the poll. Yes Iron, my fault. The heave one that rusts when wet .

And yes still going to stay with F/I. Thats what started this problem. But cant go back to the N/A side.

Now you can build the bottom end to withstand some boost! It is pretty much 6 of one half dozen another.

408 Iron with FI seems to be a killer setup (or with juice, or both ). You can find some 408's for nearly the same $ as some 347AL. GL

I would think that either is going to support you well into the 900+RWHP range.

if you are shooting for really high numbers, i would go with iron. Some in the fi section, and I have heard elsewhere besides forums, that the liners in Al blocks will distort way more than soild iron will (decreasing ring seal and power). Of course this is at outrageous hp numbers....

I am goin with resleeved alum. by R.E.D. Stronger liners and won't distort like stock. And you know Steve will do it right.

I voted before I read your post but anyways why don't you care about weight. Weight is the enemy. Why would you not care? Just trying to understand your logic.

I would personally go with a forged aluminum 402 ls2 with direct port nitrous....billet main, caps, reinforced girdle etc.

I voted alum three reasons
1. gets rid of heat better than iron
2. weighs a little less than iron
3. finally with the cost going down of ls1 block compared to lets say 2-3 years ago the only advantage of an iron block is that it is stronger under boost , but then agian you could always throw some darton sleeves in the alum block

Probably because an iron 408 + d1sc = enough power that the additional 60lbs of weight doesn't really matter.

Nice thread revival.

Maybe. I don't know. If you're putting down 750rwhp on a street car I don't really think 60lbs matters. Maybe if you were running a drag queen where every little extra mattered....

i said steel (iron) build it once, build it right, build it to withstand all the abuse you don't even plan to throw at it. and whats 60lb's when you're making 1000 hp+ or so the iron will be stronger. You said it your self weights not an issue

Voted Aluminum for lighter weight and who said it can't handle boost or nitrous if built and tuned right.
