Doesn't a big stall converter help with surging?

I wouldnt think so because the you dont use the stall at idle, only under load.

I could be wrong though.

When your A4 ride starts surging usually you can get it under control by pressure on the brake pedal. It kinda holds it back and lets it settle down a little. My ride only surges when its trying to pull itself around at idle. Like at a stoplite or when your backing up.

Well with a big, loose converter like mine (Fuddle 4400) at idle I can rev it in drive up to 3k without moving forward at all. Would this help calm the surging down at all or just make it disappear while it is revving only to return at idle again.

Surging is really only at idle, when you start the car, or pull up to a stop light. Bucking is from lugging the motor, and will only happen in an auto when the verter is locked.
It can be reduced a lot in an auto by moving the lock up points up.
Then only way you're going to be able to get a big cam to drive like stock is by street tuning. A simple one time dyno tune is not going to cut it. You need to tune, see how the car acts after putting some miles on it and make corrections.

I get VERY MINOR surge with my cam everyonce in awhile, not often (kinda weird) more when its really hot 90+ outside. But she does buck big time, it's kind of funny, sometimes i'll roll through a parking lot doin it on purpose and see what kind of looks I get. lol some people look at me with a blank "WTF" look on their face...
Tuned my MadZ28 btw...

with and auto, you do want a bigger/looser stall with the bigger cams. I have an F14 w/3k~ stall. I get some BUCKING when creeping around in 2nd doing about 1500. Just have to give it/hold a little gas and its fine. But have a stall ready. My stall was good when the car was stock, but waaaaaaayyyyy to tight with the bigger cam. To where I get SURGING when sitting at a light with the A/C on. With the A/C off its fine, drives like stock. BTW, I have a very good tune.

Well with the TRex I will be running a 4400 stall, 4.10s and an Ed Wright tune. Hopefully I will be alright. For the DIY tuning, do I use LS1 edit, EFIlive, or what? I guess I should check out the tuning section for once...

I see your stuck on the T-rex like i am and this will be my D/D, but there is no way i would attempt to tune a cam that big myself. if its not your D/D you might be ok, but be prepared to spend some big money on tunning. as im sure you already know.

I plan on having it dyno tuned by Ed Wright here locally. However, after the initial tune I would like to be able to do some driving and toying with a few things to see if I can get any surging/bucking under control if I experience any.
