Default Cam/Heads for even-tempered performance?

I know this issue has been beaten to death- but I need a starting point.

I'd like to get somewhere in the neighborhood of 380-400 RWHP out of a 2001 Camaro SS, 6 speed- which at the present time is completely stock.

I'd like it to have a good idle quality, and be even tempered in just about any situation I put it in. This won't be a track car- this is a daily driver I'd like to beef up.

What head/cam packages should I be looking at? Headers I know are a given.
Anything else I will need as far as bolt ons?

Another question- where can I take the car after mods to get dyno tuned, and have the car remapped? I live in SC, but can go to NC or GA if needed.

Well, I'm sure a lot of combinations will be suggested. All I can tell you is I wanted to get to 400 rwhp that had to peak under 6,000 RPM with a flat torque curve. I don't track my car but was looking for a little more fun when you squeeze the go pedal. My dyno is in the dyno section under "Dart 205" and I am very happy with the performance, the idle and it drives like stock. That was important to me because I want my wife to not feel the car is a handful to drive and she doesn't even notice what I did the way she drives it.

I'm looking for the same dyno numbers, but I also want the suspension to run 12.0's or high 11's.

The basic question first: what kind of h/c combo should we be looking for to see a mild mannered 400whp? I'm at 330whp with just headers.

Hey look at my sig for a great steetable combo. No drivability issues at all except a sweet sounding car that hauls ***. This is all through a 9inch and steel drive shaft so with a good tuner you can expect maybe 10 horse more through a 10 bolt. Even with the 411 my mpg is great, about 230 miles to a tank in city traffic.

Look at the sig on my 04 corvette. Car pulls very well through 6200 and still gets great mileage.

What do you guys think of the new TSP head/cam package?

Wonder if it meets my requirements?

I would like to have a little lope in there if possible, but not sure how it would affect drivability.

Who makes the TR cam?

At what point do you know if you need bigger injectors?

It's always nice to keep the wife happy!! (or at least make them think that they are ) I'm hoping that my new combo will hit 400, too. I'll be running the Dart 205's, with a 222/226 .599/.614 cam and an LS6 intake. (mines a '98 and didn't have one from the factory) Time will tell as my installation isn't scheduled until the week after next. I'll post some numbers (unless they're totally embarrassing) after I get it tuned and dynoed. I'm hoping for very high 11's, also.

The numbers you are chasing can be had with a budget HC setup. I would give Jason at TSP a call, let him know your criteria for your setup and he will be able to sell you everything as a package including the boltons. This will save you money and time.

Yeah- the TSP package looks pretty good. As I said, I wouldn't mind having a little lope there, just so it doesn't sound "factory", but don't want to deal with surging, or fluttering idle speed, etc. Don't know if thats possible, but would love to hear from guys that know.

With a 2001 you cam do it easily cam only. The 241 heads flow better than we got in the early LS1 years, stock they don't make more power because they don't have a big enough cam to take advantage of it. Just go with a 224 588 or a 228 588 cam kit, it consistently gets cars into the 390rwhp range with a good tune.

i'd say just go cam only with something like the 224,.581 on a 114 if you want it to idle decent.get some long tubes, ory or catted y and a cat-back and you should be in the 375 + range with a tune.

I've got a teensy T1 (single pattern .558" 221) with unmilled AFR 205s going through cats, and it put out the numbers in the sig.

I'd say a set of 205s and a TR224 should easily put you past 400 with the supporting mods, be very tame, keep strong low end torque, and return pretty good mileage.

With the cams listed here ( Thanks to everyone who's chimed in, BTW) will I need a professional dyno tune, or is the tune something I can do myself?

Still no feedback on some good tuners in my area. Any help there would be most appreciated.

Check out my sig, mine was very cheap and cost effective way to get there. Very happy with it too!
