Signs of a Line Hone
I am trying to determine if my block and main caps have been line honed before. I was wondering if I would be able to see any evidence of this being done with just my eyes, such as a machining pattern on the caps or something. I was hoping to build the shortblock this long weekend, but this has thrown a wrench into my plan.
Thanks!
Thanks!
If it means anything, the main caps and the block, where the main bearings sit, have a similar slight crosshatch pattern in the metal as the cylinder walls, which have been honed ofcourse.
If its a cross hatch pattern, then its definately from honing of some sort. Milling / boring will not leave a crosshatch. I think block come from the factory like that though, so it wont tell you if its received an aftermarket (more accurate) hone.

Jason, I will talk to the other Jason ASAP, thanks for the idea.
if they are aftermarket main cap then they have been align bored and honed, no good engine shop would ship a block with aftermarket mains with out doing this, or at least I would seriously hope not.
If the mains have the cross hatching they have been machined.
If the mains have the cross hatching they have been machined.
