Along these same lines, how much would you want to mill the heads on a stock cammed setup...I guess I don't know what the DCR is stock, so I wouldn't know what it would go up to with milling.

Stock DCR with 98-00 cam is around 7.0:1

You can mill to 59cc and still stay not approach 8.5:1 DCR with stock cam. Milling is a great idea when doing heads-only.

Wow...didn't know stock DCR was that low...is it the same for the 01-02 cams?

I don't have the exact stock cam specs of the '01-02 cams, but I would expect them to have higher DCR (because of shorter duration and narrower LSA).

well, true. i should have phrased it differently. but yes your right, more 'power under the curve' is made with the increase in flow numbers at low lift as well.

i did heads only on the wife's car. picked up 37 rwhp. drove and sounded like stock. just with the added hp. yeah yeah, more expensive than doing a cam only. to each their own.

before/after head swap stock tune

then tuned with the VHP tuner

I considered going this way for a long time, and was going to go with the Crane 1.8 rockers rather then the cam change. I spent a lot of time looking into it and thought it was a good way to go.

Haven't seen Pat G on here in awhile but for cylinder heads I'd contact Texas Speed and Performance and see what they can do for you on a factory casting or maybe go for their PRC castings.

With the small under sized stock cams, I don't think it will make all that much difference in which set of quality ported heads are selected.

ultimate-chevrolet-ls-cylinder-head-test notice how closely the majority of the heads performed in the test.

I'd favor a set of ported 5.3 heads by Total Engine Airflow or Texas Speed & Performance as best bang for the buck.

Next a set of ported LS6/243/799's Total Engine Airflow or Texas Speed & Performance.

If budget is bigger a nice set of Trick Flow's.

Even a little cam like a Lingenfelter GT2-3 will gain another ~30whp to 35whp in addition to the gains for ported heads and basically drive like stock.
