Question possible 383

I might be looking at a shortblock that the guy claims is a gen 3 383. What are some ways to tell if it's a gen 3 shortblock. LS1 based heads won't fit on anything earlier, will they?

all GenIII's will look the same externally. you are correct, GenIII stuff is not compatible with genI/II. however unless you can check the crank theres no way to tell if its a 4" or 3.622 stock stroke.

But what are the differences between a gen III and a genI/II block?

just about everything, lol. the GenIII is a clean slate build, the only thing it carries over is the 4.400 bore spacing. basically if the motor looks like the one in your TA its a genIII.
