ls6 swap in ls1 car
with my scholarship money for college i get to pick a car in the 20k range.
ive found this awesome 99 ss for 16k with low miles and i want to use the rest for mods
the summit book has this gm performance parts ls6 swap rated at 405hp
has anybody ever done that? im looking to see if its worth it with an exhaust and how hard to do
thanks

Ls6
IMO no, Iwas going to go the same route when I started planning mods on my T/A and after reading alot on this forum as well as other sorces I found that for the amount of money the LS6 kit goes for you could get better cam and heads for the same money or a little more. The ls6 cam is a nice cam but it is a small cam that IMO is not worth all the work of a swap for the results you get. Many of the aftermarket cams are very streetable and with a proper tune( which you will need anyway with the LS6 kit) have great driveability and performance. You can even get a set of ported Patriots for the same money or less than new ls6 heads.

it isnt , but when you can get a little bit bigger cam used for half the price, and I guess Patriot heads with some pacesetter Lt's, Labor will be in the 1000's to install heads cam exhaust and tune. Look in parts for sale and see if you can find a bargin. I was in the same boat you were i was a hair away from getting that kit.
405hp is so easy to get at the crank its not even funny. A "tune" , UD pulley, Tstat, and either a cutout or Ory and catback, LT's, plus Lid and the free ram air will get you too about 350-60 at wheels which is 410 crank HP. There are good sponsors do some reading and see what you like. JRP has a good cam write up in this section or the in the 2nd thread in opening page.

The LS6 is a great kit if you wanna a factory upgrade.
Common NA combo that I have seen
Patriot Stage 2 5.3's
Pacesetter Lt's
224/224-28
Hardened Pushrods
LS6 or Fast 90
LS2 timing chain
28.8 or bigger injectors
If you wanna a quicker semi less expensive route go STS.
As you see there is an abundance of choices to burn whole in pocket

Congrats on the sweet deal! Paying attention in school payed off sooner than you probably thought it would, huh?
I'd say take advantage of this great opportunity, be patient, and save around $5,000 more and skip straight to a C5 Corvette. Insurance won't really be worse, and you need less hp to go as fast. Plus, it's a CORVETTE!
I could have gotten a Mustang GT or high mileage F-Body my Junior year of high-school, but I waited and kept driving a clunker until my sophomore year of college and bought my first 'vette. It was worth the wait.
But if you're dead-set on getting a ride now, forget the LS6 package. You can get modified LS6 heads for $1100 with good springs from TSP. If you're getting a six-speed, you could also opt for something like their 228r cam. More agressive than LS6 cam and lots more power, but still very streetable/DD by most folks' standards.
Good luck whatever you decide!

What is already done to the SS, and how many miles are on it? $16K is top dollar for a '99SS. I bought my '02 SOM SS w/ 30k miles for $17K. FYI
