Opening beside the valves just increases bore width, and unless you have a larger than 3.90 bore it will hurt flow. I dont get why they did what they did. IMO, you are going to need to start over. Why didnt you just use a 317 head to start with?

For the 243 heads that I have added volume, I took it out of the "bottom" of the chamber below the plug. Depth where you can afford it, not creating another quench area.

If this is not a high HP application, meaning a basic H/C with no spray. You could get that garbage coating off and have the indentions welded and resurfaced. It is just going to make the heads alittle softer than they are now.

You would need an experienced head specialized that understands the importance of keeping the casting as cool as possible while the repair is being done. The cost could rival the core charge of new heads. Get some 317s and mill down alittle if you need to.
