Uh... as i understand it the "long" and "short" block terms usually mean how complete en engine is...

short... no heads or valvetrain

long... complete engine

so a 346 can be either... at least that is the way the terms are used that ive ever heard... now small or big block.. different story

i supose i could be wrong or there might be multiple meanings

Any motor can come in a short or a long block.

Heads = Long
Block and rotating assembly = Short

Small and big are 2 different animals that have completely different parts.

[wayback]

I remember this one. I did the engine assm. and install.
That one was a 347ci shortblock with stock heads on the initial buildup, he added the PP heads later. It doesn't have Comp R's in it anymore, but does have Comp OEM lifters in it which are much better for that setup. If I remember right, it made real close to 400rwhp through the A4.

HA HA HA!!!

Are you thinking smallblock?

Shortblock = block, crank, rods, pistons - no heads or cam
Longblock = engine with heads and cam, timing set, etc.
Crate engine = Complete

Does that mean that shortblock is synonymous with bottom end?

Yes, I guess you could look at it that way. You could say you have a stock shortblock, which means a stock bottom end. Although, If you were to build the bottom end, it wouldnt necessarily mean getting a new block. In that case it might only mean crank, rods and pistons.

sure, the shortblock is mearly a rotaing assembly installed in a block. Add a cam and heads to it and you have a long block.

You should go back and edit your original post. You know, screw up the punctuation, add extraneous characters, misspell some words. As long as you don't change the actual content no one will no the difference. All in jest, man.
