Default Engine noise after a night @ the track

Hope you guys can help, this sounds totally bad Distinctively on the passenger side bank is where the noise is at. At idle, almost no noise, but after coming down from a rev (big or small), I hear what sounds like a rapid puff-of-air sound. Its almost like an air-whirrling sound, like what you would imagine a piston would sound like moving up & down. While driving, only under a load, I hear a loud rapid puffing sound, the same one from under the hood at idle, only much much louder. But this dissipates once at a steady cruise.

I've checked any vacuum connections I could find, as well as plug wires and for any kind of exhaust leaks with no success. The car still feels like it has good power and response, no codes either. Any ideas? Hope I am explaining this well enough.

Anyone? Could I have blown a valve or something? Should I pull the valve covers and take a look? I don't want to drive the car with this sound.

I would look at the exhaustmanifold, or header gasket on that side.

Sounds like you may have taken out a gasket.
I think of it were more internal, you would get some type of code...
Check for any exhast leaks............

I inspected the exhaust manifold & gasket and didn't see anything outta the ordinary. I do know that I torqued the headers down way too tight when I installed them eariler this year (30ft-lbs). Would replacing the gaskets be worth anything? I got the gay-*** edelbrock shorties, will any factory header gasket fit those?

How does the car run? Still rev and make power?

Sounds like you just have a torn gasket. My KooKs were installed with the right torque spec and I can still hear a little puff puff sound when I drive by a brick wall with the windows down.

It still runs and revs well. Pleanty of power. That puff puff sound is HELLA loud when I get on the gas, even when there aren't any walls for echos. Can I pull the gasket, inspect it, and put it back in if it looks okay?

If it’s your header that is leaking – you should be able to feel the air blowing by. You’re going to have to let it cool off (a lot) and then feel for exhaust when you idle the engine up.

I think that you will need a new header gasket if you unbolt your headers. Might be a good idea anyway since you over-torqued them anyway.

I can smell exhaust from under the hood, but thought that it might have been the wind blowing from the tailpipes. So now the question is, will any factory gasket work?

i had a similar problem once. at first I heard more of a tick when i went on the gas and i couldn't figure out what it was or feel any exaust, turned out that the weld around my E.G.R provision on the header cracked. I didn't notice it until the next day when i started my car and the whole thing blew off my header. So you might want to dounle check all of the welds on your exaust.

Well it was the header collector gasket. The damn thing disintigrated. I pulled the header apart from the cat and the gasket came out in tiny little crumbled pieces. I guess Edelbrock gaskets aren't all that great. Thanks for all the help guys!

Paper gaskets aren't all that great. I tend to throw away the gaskets that come with headers and put good ones on. I don't like doing header installs enough to do the same car twice.

Likewise, my Lt1 tends to loosen up stock bolts after a while, and they are a PITA to tighten, especially hot or when I can't find the modified closed end wrench I made... so locking bolts might be an idea too.

LS1, the factory MLS gaskets are pretty good.
