Default # 8 piston blew, questions

ok welll i bought this cts-v with a blown motor well we took it out today and it has the #8 piston blown.

the sleeve looks good but i will put a new one in just to be safe, now for the questions, do ya think the head can be reworked to be useable again? I will prolly buy 2 vavles to replace those to be safe.

also do ya think the crank is still good? the engine turns over fine now once we got the huge chunks out of there.

here are some pics

Well you will be able to check the rest of the rotating assembly when you drop the pan to replace the rod and piston. You want to be close to the weight of the origional parts, which might be difficult to measure since they are in pieces. I'd just get close to the others and call it good. A full rebuild would be better, but if everything looks decent I can't see a problem with replacing the one piston and rod. Just install a new/used piston, new set of rings and drill hone the cylinder.

That head should be ok with a little clean up. Any idea what happened? I have 8 good rods and 7 pistons from my Z I was going to sell with the crank also. The pistons are fly cut on the intake -1cc. Let me know if you can use anything.

I see the other half of the rod, but what caused it to break like that?

I'd say by looking at the piece of rod with the wristpin still in it, it looks bent pretty bad to me. I would pull the whole thing apart, get the crank magged, and check the crank to see if it's bent.

Looks like piston number 7 to me. Number 7 is notorious for going lean. Might have broken a ring land and seized up the piston against one of the quench pads, from there it would have broken the piston apart and more and more stuff could have locked up and bent and broke the rod. Just one possible scenario. What mods were on the engine? If it was stock on a stock tune, its not likely it went too lean. Maybe they were spraying? The other pistons look a little speckled from detonation...

No reason to resleeve if its not grooved or cracked. Just hone it so the new rings seat.

Last time I was at the shop a roundy-round dirt track car dropped a valve and beat the snot out of the head and pistons. He is running the same head after cleaning up some of the wounds. I don't think you will have a problem. Have the guides checked if there was any piston to valve contact otherwise clean it up and go.

I would smooth the combustion chamber, check the vaves and seats, put it back together and call it a day. No need to resleeve that cylinder.

Contact Gunnar at Patriot, he has done several recent head disasters that were much worse from your pictures and the heads looked new when done.

I'm sure Gunner could do a bang up job, but any decent automotive machine shop can fix that light damage in a flash.
