Default Oil Pressure

Need suggestions.

I finally started up my LS1 => Chevelle swap and found that I didn't have any oil pressure on the upper end of the engine, the Valve Train was making a lot of noise.
I figured that I many have messed up on the oil pickup tube O-Ring (I swapped in a CTS-V pan, pickup and tray) and last week pulled the engine out to check. There was oil in the filter and seem to be some left over pressure (as some oil was pushed out as I spun the filter off). The O-Ring looked ok and got to searching and looking and will check the Oil pump next (once I get the balancer off this weekend).

Questions:
1) Has anyone heard of problems of engine sitting around for a year or so and having problem with the oil passages being plugged up ?

2) How offen or any reported problem with the oil pump releif valve (spring) haning open ?

3) How offen do the Oil Pump fail ?

4) Can I use a LS2 or LS6 oil pump (as long as I am going to look at it, may as well replace it)

Any other suggestion on what to look at or replace before I stick the engine back in ?

Thanks in advance for any help or suggestions

Did you check the top and bottom with a mechanical oil pressure gauge?

If you have oil pressure in the bottom, but not the top I'd guess plugged oil passages.

The LS6 pump replaced the LS1 so it will fit. I'm not positive on the LS2 pump. Just get a new LS6 oil pump to be safe.

Thanks for the reponse. Yes that is my next step.. check the oil pump and maybe put a new one in.. i guess that is a $80 cheap insurance.. but will put a gauge on both top and bottom on next start up.

Are the front and rear oil galley plugs installed....

This will cause the oil to dump back into the pan and not reach the top of the motor.

yea check those front and rear galley plugs. theres one under the front cover right next to the alternator, and theres one on the same line in the back of the block, under the rear cover and tranny. everyone told me for the rear one i had to take my tranny off to look, i found that you can just unscrew the copper lookin hex head plug by the oil filter and just look in, for the barbell lookin peice. My front plug was out, and i had zero pressure. none

Thanks guys.

This engine was a pull out, So the engine was running and the plugs should be there (?). I had to change the Oil Pan (pickup and windage tray also). Other than that.. nothing has changed.

I will look at them plugs and maybe take them out to inspect (maybe used compressed air to check or blow out any blockage ?).

I got the balancer off and pulled the pan and pump off. All seem ok. I pulled those plugs out and blow air into them, the pump port and the oil Filter port. No blockage there.

I blow air into the oil port to the block side of the pump and felled air on the oil filter inlet side. As I blow air into the block oil filter outlet side, I felled pressure on the oil senser port. I am not sure if there is any blockage going to the lifter and valve train.. so far I could tell the air is running from the oil filter port up the block to the sensor and that air is escaping somewhere in the block or through the lower end(rod/main bearings). I will check some more to see if it is getting up into the lifter, up the push rod and on to the rockers tomorrow.

Has anyone had a bad Oil filter cause problems ? Cause when I pulled the Filter off, there seem to be a lot of oil coming out, almost with pressure !?

Anyone have more suggestion or knowledge of how the Gen 3 oil system works..? it would help me a lot..

Thanks..
