Default Newbee, what to payfor one?

01 Firebird, 50K miles LS1 and T56 6-speed....

Totaled, and mostly stripped carcass but still has the driveline in it.

Wreck caused wiring damage, owner (purchased it to salvage other parts) says the engine and tranny or good. Not sure how he knows that since you can't start it!

He wants $3K for it all. I'm going to look at it next week. Anything in particular I should look for?

What should I offer for a non-running Ls1 W/ a T56?

Thanks,

Matt

PS I'm looking at it for an FJ40 Land Cruiser.

You could try and cut him down a little more, but honestly, 3K is a decent price for a 50K LS1 and T56.

Even one that is completely non-running and that is in a vehicle that has major side impact damage? From looking at Ebay, if it were a running set it would be a smoking deal, but the "yea it runs" coming from a guy who has never seen it run that is less than encouraging!

I'll post more once I've seen it.

Thanks,

Matt

I might look elsewhere. Looks like the only thing you have going for you on it is the 50k miles.

Take a breaker bar with a 24mm socket and see if you can turn it over with the crank pulley bolt. You could also check the plugs to look for damage. I would get some type of no doa warranty in writing before buying it. Either that or look else where for a known good drivetrain. I love the guys that swear things are great without knowing anything about it. Sounds like some wrecking yards I've been to.

Default Just a bit cynical

Yes I am! The guy salvaged what he needed for his project and this thing is what's left.

From what I've read on this forum, they're not too hard to get going if the wiring is intact. However, this one's wiring is not intact.

But, if I can get it cheap enough and make it run..... it would make the start of a freakishly powerful driveline for a FJ40 Landcruiser. It would also be much cheaper than building just about any engine / tranny combo I can think of.

With a custom transfer case and the right gears, the 6-speed could give me a nice low end crawl with reasonable highway manners too.

Good thig the wife keeps looking over my shoulder to correct my grammer tonight, otherwise I'd sound like a complete idiot. Instead of just sounding like moron.

Thanks again, I'll post more after I see it tommrow. I'm guessing he still has it.
