Default collapsed lifter, or loose spark plug

I'm doin a H/C swap. Before I started, on the stock motor with 30,000 miles I had ticking from the drivers head. I thought collapsed lifter.

When I took off the drivers manifold, the #7 spark plug was only hand tight, VERY loose. Could I have dodged the bullet? There was nothing physically wrong with the lifters or pushrods, or any of the stock valvetrain parts when I took them out.

Would a very loose spark plug cause the ticking?
Does a collapsed lifter show physical signs of wear just by looking at them? They look fine to me...

The lifter won't show any signs of a problem if it is collapsed.

…so what should I do here?

How do I know if a lifter is collapsed? (when its removed from the engine)
Soak them in oil, or get new ones just for prevention?

Don't want to pull a head back off if there is clicking once again… I already have it apart now...

if there is black crap around where the loose spark plug was i would say you are fine. if not and you have the money I would reaplce them now while everything is apart
