Default Mustang 2 valve 4.6 Gurus inside

I wish I knew as much about stangs as I do LS1s, but I don't. I'm trying to help my buddy out with an 00 GT with all the bolt-ons and 3.73 gears. He's wanting to install a set of cams. He knows absolutely nothing about what to get, and I have done zero reading about them to help him decide.

I saw a set of comp cams that were a 224/230, and that seemed pretty decent, and now he has came across a set of 230/236. What would be something he could go with that would be comparable to a 224/224 or 228/230 in an LS1? I know that the smaller cubes will mean that the same size cam in our cars would be more cam in his with just the lil 281.

The car is not really a DD but needs to maintain great street manners, cause it is driven alot and even on some longer trips. Thanks in advance

my dad just put cams in his 00 gt also along with stage 2 heads cams and a stroker motor, but he has a blower on it also, ill find out what size his are. the cams in a overhead cam car dont sound as mean you can deffinatly tell there is something there and it does sound real nice but not overy loud because you have 2 cams where we have one. you will also not get a 40-50 hp gain with cams in a 4.6 either, deffinatly have him check out stangnet and corral.net when i had my stang i was on those sites for 5 years alot of good info just like this site... good luck

Give Sean Hyland Motorsports, Johnny Lightning Performance, Modular Performance or Probe Industries. They are some of the bigger Mod Motor company's out there they should be able to help you out in picking out some parts.

I know that's a 3v 4.6, but BBR may have something for your friend.

It sounds great at idle, but like a stock V8 when revved. A cammed OHV GM motor sounds like it's going rip your face off when you rev it.

EDIT: For comparison purposes

My buddy has an '01 or '02 GT with the 2valve mod motor. He used the Comp 230something 550lift on a 113LSA. It's pretty badass for a Mustang. He rolled like that for a while at about 300 rwhp, tuned and with full exhaust and CAI. He later added a Vortech S/C @ 8lbs. He is now 430 rwhp and 400rwtq. I guess I don't have to tell you to get the beehive 918's.

I Know the Mod engine inside in and out . A 00' Stang has PI heads.
Use XE270AH 234/238 .550 113LSA
Cam Part # 102600
Spring Part # 26113
Get PCM reflashed after cam install and try to get long tubes
This will give you a slight lopy idle(smooth) Sounds mean all around
This is also a good blower cam
I know that Duration looks radical. But this cam acts like a 224/230 on a LS1 engine
This cam is a daily driver cam. Very goog street maners.
And If your buddy want to swap heads. Get Patriot Performance Stage 3 Heads
But you will make good power with stock heads. You really dont need to get aftermarket heads. Unless you want to squeez all you can, then OK do it.

the cam I recommend is by far the best for your application.
I have done 3 Mod engines and that the cam to go with.
Put to you this way. Those engines have a stupid swing hydraulic lifter
That cam has better street manners then the 224/228 .581 114LSA . And less lopyness
XE-R 273 (224@.050)
XE270AH (234@.050)
If the Mod engine were a push rod engine(OHV) then the actual Duration@.050 for the XE270AH would around 218/224 and thats perfect for a small engine 281(4.6L) and 329(5.4L) .
Rember this only is true on Ford Mod SOHC engines NOT DOHC witch is a badass head it flows like the LS1 head. Ford Mod SOHC heads dont flow for sh#t. PI heads flow much better but not as well as DOHC. Ford Motor Company made all SOHC heads 99'-04' as Performance Improvment Heads(PI Heads) Thats why the Boxer stangs (99-04) haul more *** than the (96-98) witch were did not have PI heads.
Also PI head engines have a High lift cam Dur@.050 = 200/209 .504/.531 Lift.
Non Dur@.050 = 202/207 .461/.466 Lift
I do know what Im talking about

All I know is that a n/a 4.6L 2v wont make much more than 350rwhp no matter what you do.

ask at corral.net

Yep those engine need blowers. 2v heads really dont flow for sh#t.
Even the PI head suck when compared the a LS1 head or any Gen 3 engine

Mike DEZ at DEZ Racing, sponsor on right, also does a lot of Ford work as well. Give him a try.

Personally I'd stick with the stock cams and heads and just add a Kennebell or a Procharger. Works out to be about the same price as h/c but will always outperform it in every aspect.
